VEXTRA NEWS DESK: Pope Leo has addressed the recent controversy surrounding his "tyrants" remark, clarifying that his comments were not a direct attack on U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking to reporters on Saturday during his tour of Africa, the pontiff emphasized that there was no intention to engage in a political debate.

The Context of the Remark

While traveling to Angola, the Pope explained that his speech—which criticized leaders for spending billions on warfare instead of human welfare—was written two weeks before President Trump made any comments about him.

"It has been perceived as if I were trying to debate the President again, but that is not in my interest at all," the Pope stated, aiming to clear the "inaccurate narrative" that has developed in recent days.

The Escalation of Tensions

The clarification follows a week of heated exchanges. On Monday, President Trump launched a verbal attack on the first American Pope, labeling him "weak on crime" and "terrible for foreign policy." This friction stems largely from the Pope’s vocal criticism of the U.S.-Israeli military operations in Iran.

Focus on Global Welfare

During a powerful address in Cameroon last Thursday, the Pope highlighted the disparity in global spending. He criticized leaders who "turn a blind eye" to the billions spent on destruction while resources for healing, education, and restoration remain scarce. He also condemned the ongoing cycle of violence in regions of Cameroon that have been struggling with insurgency for nearly a decade.

Trump’s Response

In response to the Pope's stance, President Trump told reporters that while the Pope has the right to speak his mind, he reserves the right to disagree. At one point, Trump even shared an AI-generated image portraying himself in a religious light, though it was later removed from his social media.

As the Pope continues his journey through Africa, his message remains focused on peace, fiscal responsibility for humanitarian needs, and an end to global instability.
